Cambridge Stained Glass

Victorian Stained Glass

In the olden days stained glass was manufactured using small pieces of glass fixed together with a lead strip and soldered to keep the design together. Although this procedure is sometimes still used today, the modern overlay stained glass is a more popular and versatile product. This Stained Glass can be found all over the country and it is especially popular in the Cambridge area and has been used on some of Cambridges grand buildings and executive homes.

Toughened glass can be used in our stained glass along with self adhesive lead strip and transparent colour films. These materials produce a beautiful effect that lasts. When using natural lead strip, we can solder the joints of the lead to help make it unrecognisable from the traditional style of leaded lites. For some of the larger projects in the Cambridge area we can actually come out and visit you to discuss your aims and ideas for your decorative glass project through our Executive Service. We can also design glass, manufacture the glass and deliver the glass to the Cambridge area by using our Client Pages service to help keep the costs down.

Modern Leaded Glass Feature Window

What are the benefits of modern stained glass in Cambridge?

The modern procedure used throughout Cambridge has many advantages over the original stained glass technique. Energy saving is a big concern in todays world and with our stained glass design being manufactured as a stained glass overlay onto a single sheet of glass, this reduces the possibility of the cold weather coming into the home through the joints of the design.

Modern stained glass can also be applied directly onto energy saving Pilkington K Glass and this glass is now a building regulations requirement for every new window and door installation throughout the area of Cambridge and the rest of the UK.

Durability and security are another advantage with the modern day stained glass technique and this is very important to Cambridge home owners. Applying the design directly onto toughened glass or laminated glass provides long lasting and secure decorative glass. In the past people have paid thousands of pounds for the old stained glass products only to find that small coloured sections of the design have cracked within weeks. This cannot happen with our product.

The materials

Stained Glass Roundel

There are literally hundreds of overlay colours to choose from for use in the modern day stained glass and most colours can be combined with a frosted overlay to create an even larger range of colours. Adhesive lead strip also comes in many colours with the old favourite through the 80’s and 90’s being natural lead colour. Today almost every job we create in the Cambridge area is manufactured using antique lead which is a dark brown or almost black colour.

Leadbitter Glass has many different lead finishes to choose from and you can view these different finishes in our Leaded Glass section. If you are planning to have stained glass or any decorative glass supplied for your Cambridge home or business, make sure that you contact us today to receive an accurate quote and turnaround time for your Stained Glass.

Recent commissions for Cambridge clients….

We have supplied many homes in Cambridge with our beautiful glass. Below are some examples of local orders.

Bird & Sun Gable End Window

Many years ago we created an Overlay Stained Glass Window for clients in Cambridge. The clients supplied a drawing of what they envisaged and we then created a CGI of how the glass would look. As you can see in the main link above, the leaded glass design makes up the sloped side of a conservatory. The glass was more than 3 and a half metres in length and the design was split into 3 individual pieces.

Large Landing Window – Ely

In 2021, we created various glass panels for an Ely client renovating their new home. The client ordered a lot of Overlay Stained Glass Windows for their home. The above link shows you the landing windows created for the stairway area. The client supplied the design as a drawing and they chose all of the colours from our online colour galleries. The pattern was to flow from the landing upstairs to the landing downstairs.

Leaded Glass Landing Windows

Another Cambridge client ordered two large windows with a single pattern running through both panels. We used Stippolyte Glass and the clear circles were created using 3D roundels. As we do with all order, we created a scale proof for client approval before starting on the actual glass. The link above shows the customer Client Page where we sent the drawings for approval.

RAF Wyton Skylight

Almost 30 years ago (at time of writing) we created a large ceiling panel RAF Wyton. The RAF crest was installed into the Officers Mess dining room in around 1995. The decorative glass panel measures approximately 1200mm x 1600mm. We created it using single glazed toughened glass. The ceiling lite isn’t an external window so there is no natural light coming through. At night time the ‘mess’ staff illuminate the design with the rear lights that were installed behind our glass panel.

Overlay Stained Glass Sun Port Hole

In 2017 we created a basic but beautiful circular landscape scene with sunrise for a client in Cambridge. The client had a port hole window but it lacked distinction and had no appeal. We created the Overlay Stained Glass panel using toughened safety glass. Although the design was quite simple, it still became a stunning and colourful feature in the home. The same pattern has been chosen by many customers since this first commission.

Abstract Feature Window

In 2012 we made a double glazed Overlay Stained Glass Window in an abstract style for clients in Cambridgeshire. The design was required as a central feature but it needed privacy for their staircase. They were looking for a modern design but without colour. Each section of the design had separate frosted textured overlays. The central circle was a clear facet bevel jewel measuring 50mm in diameter.
