Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Chichester ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Georgian townhouses within Chichester’s Roman walls, close to the Cathedral and its famous modern glass, are exactly the kind of period setting where etched glass has always looked its best.

Every etched panel we make is a one-off, never picked from a shelf. Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, is bespoke to your own glass sizes each time — family crests, favourite trees, and traditional Victorian motifs are all regular requests — and the vast majority of orders qualify for free delivery across Chichester.

As one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in everyday use, it lets in far more daylight than a coloured panel, with no lead work or tint blocking the view. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though most of what we make ends up in front doors across Chichester. We also produce other styles of Decorative Glass for Chichester clients, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Every Chichester order comes with its own Client Page, and within a few days of ordering, one of our glass artists posts a proof drawn to your exact glass sizes. If the pattern needs stretching, or the lettering shifting, just say so — we’ll amend the drawing and send it back, as many times as it takes. Nothing is sandblasted until the design is exactly as you want it.

Etched glass suits house names and numbers particularly well, and it’s one of our most common requests for the fanlight above a front door. If your Chichester home has one, we can create a panel showing your house number or name. For the sharpest result, we generally etch the surrounding background and leave the lettering itself clear, so it stands out at a glance.

We start with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen design, protecting everything except the pattern itself. High-pressure abrasive then wears down the exposed glass to a permanent frost, while the masked areas stay perfectly clear and glossy.
Because that texture becomes part of the glass rather than a coating on top of it, it never fades, peels, or discolours — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and lift within a couple of years.

If an old etched panel in your home has cracked or gone missing, send us a photo — our glass artists can often reproduce the original pattern closely, even without the piece itself.
