Etched Glass Bury St Edmunds

Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Bury St Edmunds ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Georgian townhouses along Abbeygate Street and Angel Hill, close to the Abbey ruins and the Cathedral, are exactly the kind of period setting where etched glass has always looked its best.

Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, obscures sections of clear glass to leave a permanent pattern behind. There’s no shortcut version of this on our shelves — every panel is measured and built for your own glass, whether that’s a family crest, a favourite tree, or a traditional Victorian motif. The vast majority of orders qualify for free delivery across Bury St Edmunds.

It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, valued for letting through far more daylight than a coloured panel. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though most of what we make ends up in front doors across Bury St Edmunds. We also produce other styles of Decorative Glass for Bury St Edmunds clients, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Our Free Client Pages Design Service

Every Bury St Edmunds order comes with its own Client Page, and within a few days of ordering, we post a proof drawn precisely to your glass measurements. If something’s not sitting right — the pattern too small, the lettering not quite centred — flag it and we’ll send a revised version. We’ll go round as many times as it takes to get it right, and won’t switch the sandblaster on until you’ve told us to proceed.

Perfect For House Names And Numbers

Etched glass suits house names and numbers particularly well, and it’s one of our most common requests for the fanlight above a front door. If your Bury St Edmunds home has one, we can create a panel showing your house number or name. For the sharpest result, we generally etch the surrounding background and leave the lettering itself clear, so it stands out at a glance.

How Our Etched Glass Is Made

There’s nothing complicated about the theory: a sheet of toughened safety glass, a mask cut precisely to the design, and abrasive blasted at real pressure onto whatever the mask leaves exposed. What matters is the doing of it — get the pressure or the mask wrong and the result looks amateurish. Get it right, and the exposed glass wears down to a clean, permanent frost while everything under the mask stays glossy.

Because that texture is worked into the glass itself, it doesn’t fade or peel the way a stick-on “etch effect” film does after a couple of years of yellowing.

If a panel at home has cracked or gone missing over the years, a photograph is usually enough for us to reproduce the original pattern closely.
