Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Stourbridge ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The town was the centre of British glassmaking during the Industrial Revolution, built up by Huguenot and Lorraine glassworkers who settled there for the local coal and sand, and its Red House Glass Cone remains one of the few furnaces of that era still standing.

Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, obscures sections of clear glass to leave a permanent pattern behind. Every panel is built to your own glass measurements, made in a town where an understanding of glass runs genuinely deep, not just picked up recently. How Our Etched Glass Is Made

We start with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen design, protecting everything except the pattern itself. High-pressure abrasive is then blasted onto the exposed glass, wearing the surface down to a permanent frost wherever the mask doesn’t cover it — a genuine, one-time change to the glass, done properly by people who understand how the material behaves.

Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than sitting on top of it, there’s nothing to peel or fade later, unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and lift within a couple of years.

If an old etched panel at home has cracked or gone missing over the years, a photograph is usually enough for our glass artists to reproduce the original pattern closely.
