Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Tiverton ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. Tiverton Castle has stood guard over the town since the 1100s, its walls watching over the confluence of the Exe and Lowman rivers for close to 900 years.

Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, standing guard over your own doorway, in the same way Tiverton’s own castle has stood guard over the town for close to 900 years. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Tiverton.

It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a town that knows how to be watched over by the same castle for close to 900 years. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Tiverton make up most of what we produce. We also build the other three styles of Decorative Glass found on this site, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Every Tiverton order comes with its own Client Page, where a computer-drawn proof appears within a few days, scaled precisely to your glass. Something not quite right? Tell us and we’ll send a revised version — no cap on how many rounds it takes — because we won’t switch the sandblaster on until it’s exactly right.

House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Tiverton home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.

We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a pattern set to keep watch over your front door, the same way Tiverton’s own castle has kept watch over the town for close to 900 years.
Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.

Got an old etched panel at home that’s cracked or gone missing over the years? A photograph is usually all our glass artists need to reproduce the original pattern closely.
