Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Truro ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. Truro Cathedral, completed in 1910, was the first attempt at building a new English cathedral on a new site in over 650 years, since Salisbury in 1220.

Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, a design attempted properly rather than half-finished, in the same spirit as the ambition Truro showed when it built its cathedral from nothing. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Truro.

It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a city that knows how to make the first attempt at something no one had tried in 650 years. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Truro make up most of what we produce. We also build the other three styles of Decorative Glass found on this site, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Every Truro order comes with its own Client Page, where a computer-drawn proof appears within a few days, scaled precisely to your glass. Something not quite right? Tell us and we’ll send a revised version — no cap on how many rounds it takes — because we won’t switch the sandblaster on until it’s exactly right.

House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Truro home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.

We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a genuine attempt carried through to completion, in the same spirit as Truro’s own cathedral, an attempt at something no one had managed in 650 years.
Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.

Got an old etched panel at home that’s cracked or gone missing over the years? A photograph is usually all our glass artists need to reproduce the original pattern closely.
