Stained Glass Scarborough

Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Overlay Stained Glass panels to homes and businesses across Scarborough ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. St Mary’s Church, standing just below Scarborough Castle since the 12th century, holds a seven-light east window by the York glassmaker Harry Stammers, installed in 1958 and depicting all creation praising its maker.

Every panel is designed and manufactured in our own Decorative Glass Studio — either from your own photo or idea, or from one of the hundreds of patterns in our gallery. Our Overlay Stained Glass comes as either toughened single glazing or a resilient double-glazed unit, and suits a front door, a landing window, or any other glazed opening in the home equally well. The great majority of orders qualify for free delivery across Scarborough.

We’ve supplied Overlay Stained Glass for a Prime Minister’s home, for Hollywood film sets, and for well-known musicians and billionaires — though the vast majority of what we make is still for homeowners across Scarborough. If a shade doesn’t suit the hallway, or a border needs adjusting, let us know — we’ll redraw it as often as necessary, and won’t start production until you’re happy with what’s in front of you.

How Our Stained Glass Is Made

A coastal town puts more strain on glass and glazing than most, which is one reason old-style leaded panels — made up of dozens of small pieces held together by soft lead alone — rarely age well anywhere near the sea. Our Overlay Stained Glass avoids that weak point by building the whole design onto a single sheet of toughened safety glass, with no lattice of separate pieces to work loose.

Pilkington K Glass is available where required too, and current building regulations call for it on new window and door installations across Scarborough and the rest of the UK.

Every panel we build uses toughened or laminated safety glass, since durability matters just as much to us as how the finished design looks.

Plenty of homeowners have a story about traditional leaded glass costing a fortune and still cracking within weeks. Our Overlay Stained Glass was designed to put a stop to that.

Our process

We start by hand-shaping lead strips onto the toughened glass, tracing your design in outline without any colour applied. Once that outline is complete, the glass is turned over and coloured piece by piece, each section sitting neatly within its own leaded boundary.

Matching lead lines are then added to the back, mirroring the front exactly, so what you end up with is leaded and coloured on both faces, not just the side you see.
