Etched Glass Ware
Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Ware ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Great Bed of Ware, built around 1590 for a local coaching inn, became so famous that Shakespeare joked about it in Twelfth Night.
Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, a piece worth talking about long after it’s made, in the same spirit as the bed Ware’s own inn once made famous enough for Shakespeare. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Ware.
It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a town that knows how to make something so well known Shakespeare joked about it. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Ware make up most of what we produce. Perfect For House Names And Numbers
House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Ware home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.
How Our Etched Glass Is Made
We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a piece genuinely worth talking about, the same way Ware’s own famous bed became a piece people couldn’t stop talking about.
Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.
