Peterborough Etched Glass

A little bit about us

In 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio was established and we produce Etched Glass and Victorian Etched Glass panels for homes. Etched Glass was one of the earliest forms of decorative glass to be developed. Today it is often used to produce elegant contemporary designs. Etched panels are a very popular choice for homes in the Peterborough area. Almost every panel we manufacture will qualify for free delivery to homes in the Peterborough area.

Other forms of Decorative Glass we produce for Peterborough clients are Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass and Fused Glass

Our services

After placing your order with us, you’ll receive our free design service – known as the Client Pages Service. This is where we create a Computer Generated Proof to show your chosen design in your custom glass sizes. We’ll send you this proof a few days after you complete your order. This proof allows you to request changes before the panel is produced, ensuring you’re 100% happy with the final panel(s). You may want to alter a decorative border or increase the size of a central motif. We’ll make these amendments until you’re completely happy with the design and give us the thumbs up to begin production.

Etched Glass Wild Flowers Window Peterborough

We recently created a small etched glass window consisting of many Wild Flowers. The panel was created with a clear background as it was to be used for a room partition and privacy wasn’t important. See the proof we created before the glass was made – Etched Glass Wild Flowers Window

Etched Glass Door Number

A Peterborough client approached us and enquired if we could make a double glazed panel for their existing front door. The client wanted the word ONE in an Art Deco style. You can view a photo of the finished glass here – Art Deco Door Number

Peterborough! Your numbers up!

If you would like to display your house name or number in door glass or a fanlight, etched panels are an excellent choice. Many homes in Peterborough have top lights (transom lights) above their doors. This glazed area is the ideal place to display your etched house name or number. If you have a transom window above your door, we can create a bespoke etched glass panel displaying your house name or number. As one of the most popular requests from our clients, our glass artists produce hundreds of these panels every year! Your custom etched panel can be created using any font and decorative border you like. We can also create etched door glass to match the fanlights if required.

How is Etched Glass made?

We never use ‘stickers’ on our etched glass panels. Our etched glass is produced the right way, by sandblasting the glass so the etching is permanent and of the highest quality. All too often, companies will tell you they offer “Etched Glass” when actually they don’t. They simply place a vinyl sticker onto the glass, so no ‘etching’ has actually taken place. Not only does this result in a poor fake ‘etched effect’, but the stickers can turn yellow. The stickers will shrink on the panel after being exposed to sunlight for a few years. Companies may also state that their etched glass is screen-printed glass. This type of glass also suffers from the same dis-colouration issue over time. You should always ensure you’re paying for a true ‘sandblasted‘ etched glass product for quality that lasts. You can see the problems encountered with fake etched glass here.

Our process

First, we cut a temporary mask using your chosen pattern and overlay it onto one side of the panel. This ensures the areas we want to remain clear don’t get etched. We then place the masked panel inside a specialist sandblasting booth for coarse grit/sand to be fired at high speed across the panel. Once the etching process is complete, the temporary mask is removed and the areas that were unprotected have now been etched. If the glass is single glazed, we will apply a protective sandblast coating to the etched side to prevent unwanted grease smudges. If the glass is to be double glazed, we don’t apply the coating because the etched side will already be protected within the unit.
