Etched Glass Hoddesdon
Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Hoddesdon ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Rye House Gatehouse is one of the earliest brick buildings anywhere in the country, put up in the 15th century when brick was still a genuine novelty.

Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, using an old technique still ahead of most modern alternatives, in much the same way Hoddesdon’s own brickwork was once ahead of its time. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Hoddesdon.

It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a town that knows how to be home to one of the earliest brick buildings in the country. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Hoddesdon make up most of what we produce. We also build the other three styles of Decorative Glass found on this site, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Our Free Client Pages Design Service
Every Hoddesdon order comes with its own Client Page, where a computer-drawn proof appears within a few days, scaled precisely to your glass. Something not quite right? Tell us and we’ll send a revised version — no cap on how many rounds it takes — because we won’t switch the sandblaster on until it’s exactly right.

Perfect For House Names And Numbers
House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Hoddesdon home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.

How Our Etched Glass Is Made
We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a technique that has stayed genuinely useful for centuries, much like Hoddesdon’s own early brickwork.
Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.

Got an old etched panel at home that’s cracked or gone missing over the years? A photograph is usually all our glass artists need to reproduce the original pattern closely.
