Devon Etched Glass

The Leadbitter Glass studio was established in 1994 and we supply homes around Devon with Etched Glass and Victorian Etched Glass Panels. Etched Glass is one of the oldest and most beautiful forms of decorative glass and one of our most popular. Although it is usually used to create traditional style panels, it is increasingly used to produce stunning contemporary art glass panels. Etched Glass can be found in many Devon homes and commercial buildings. We offer free delivery to homes in the area for almost all jobs we create.

Our studio also provides Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass and Fused Glass to clients in Devon.

If you place an order with our studio, you will receive our free professional design service – the Client Pages service. The Client Pages Service is a brilliant way to view how your bespoke etched glass panels will look before we actually create the glass. You will see your chosen glass pattern in your own unique glass sizes. You can request changes to the layout before we start work on your panel(s). A few days after ordering, you will get your very own Computer Generated Image of how your glass will look. You may want a decorative border moving slightly, an extra bit of decoration or a house number made larger. We will make the requested alterations until you are 100% happy with the layout and want us to proceed with production.

Recent commissions for Devon clients….

We have supplied many homes in Devon with our beautiful glass. Below are some examples of local orders.

Etched Glass Room Partition – Devon

Back in 2017 a Devon area customer ordered a toughened etched glass panel for a partition between 2 rooms. The client had spotted an earlier commission we had created where the customer had lit the edges of the glass with LED strips. The link above shows you the finished glass installed into the window frame. Again this client installed LED strip lights around the glass edge.

House Number Door Glass – Tiverton

Again in 2017 we supplied a single glazed toughened glass panel with the number of the house. This one was a little bit different to the average house number request, as it was requested in letters and not numbers. The glass was to be installed into a door and the text was to run down the centre of the glass. The link above shows you the drawing we created for approval. the client requested a specific font which we used in the design.

Etched Glass House Name & Number – Crediton

Also in 2017 we received an order for 3 etched glass panels for above a door entryway. The Crediton client wanted their house name and also their house number. They requested it to be made in a similar style to our 424 design. Once we created the drawing you can see in the main link above, the client approved the design and we delivered the glass a few weeks later.

Your numbers up!

Etched glass is perfect for house names and numbers for door glass and fanlights. Many Devon homes have fanlights above the door and this is the perfect place to display your house name or number. We create hundreds of house names and numbers each year so it is one of the most popular requests received by our studio. If your home has a fanlight above your front door, we can create the number or name of your home in your chosen font. You can even pick an etched glass border or other decoration to personalise your glass. We can also create matching glass for the door below if required.

How is Etched Glass made?

We do not use ‘stickers’ for our etched glass panels. The etched glass we create is made by sandblasting the glass so it is a permanent feature. Some glass companies offer ‘Etched Glass’ but just add a vinyl sticker to the glass. Stickers can and do ‘yellow’ over time and vinyl also shrinks after being on the glass for a few years. Other companies may even screen print the ‘Etched Glass Effect’ onto the glass and this product can also ‘yellow’ with time. Always make sure you are paying for a genuine glass product because as the saying goes – Buy cheap, Buy twice. See the results of ordering fake etched glass.

The process

A temporary mask is ‘cut to shape’ and applied to one side of the glass. The areas of the pattern that require etching are removed from the glass. The stencilled glass is then inserted into a sandblasting booth and coarse sand is then fired at high speed over the design. Once an even etched finish is achieved, the temporary mask is then removed. The protected areas are left clear with the unprotected areas being etched. For single glazed glass, we will apply a protective sandblast coating to the etched glass side. If the glass is to be double glazed, we do not add the coating because the etched side would be contained within the sealed unit.
