Is Stained Glass Expensive?

Mackintosh Leaded Glass

What is overlay stained glass?

Before getting into whether Overlay Stained Glass is expensive or not, it’s important to understand exactly what it is. Overlay Stained Glass is a modern method where instead of using individual ‘jigsaw’ like pieces as the old method does, one solid sheet of toughened safety glass is used with lead and colour applied to it. This overcomes the fragility issue of ‘old style’ stained glass and allows the decorative panel to be made into a double glazed unit.

Our stained glass can be created using a wide variety of plain colours and effect colours, as well as a choice of lead strip and choice of clear or textured glass.

Is stained glass expensive?

While Overlay Stained Glass CAN be expensive, it doesn’t have to be. The biggest factors that push the cost up are the level of colour and detail in the design you choose, as well as the size of the panel you require. A panel with twice the level of colour and detail can quite easily be twice the price.

Another thing to consider if you want to keep the cost down is that by choosing a design from our extensive Leaded Glass Galleries, you won’t incur a design fee. We can absolutely create bespoke designs that you might have found elsewhere, but this will cost a little extra as we don’t have the artwork on file and will have to draw it from scratch.

Roundels look fantastic as a feature in leaded panels, but not only do they add depth, they add cost. You can reduce the cost by choosing designs from our galleries which don’t include roundels, or if they do, we can substitute the roundels for a flat section of colour.

See the two panels below as an example of how varied the cost of stained glass can be. The pair of panels on the left is a third of the price of the panel on the right due to there being significantly more colour and the extra detail.

How do I know I’m getting what I’m paying for?

When you place an order with us, you get our client page design service for free. This is where we show you how your chosen design will look in your custom glass sizes through a computer generated proof. This way, should something be not quite right, you can request changes to the design until it’s perfect. Only at the point where you’re completely happy with how your finished panel(s) will look and have given us the ‘green light’, will we proceed with production.

What is possible with stained glass?

The possibilities are endless with stained glass. Whether you want something traditional, contemporary, or a bespoke image of your cat, we can create it in overlay stained glass. For more examples of what is possible, view our stained glass past works.

Found a design you like elsewhere? Maybe you’ve spotted the perfect pattern in someone else’s house or just on google images. All we need is a high quality image of the design you like and we can almost always re-create it for your panels. We often create panels to match existing ones in clients homes.
