Bolton Etched Glass
Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Bolton ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Victorian terraces built during Bolton’s rise as one of the world’s leading cotton-spinning towns are exactly the kind of period housing where etched glass has always looked its best.

Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, is made by obscuring sections of clear glass to form a decorative pattern, while leaving the rest untouched. Every panel we make is bespoke, built to your own glass sizes rather than picked from stock — we design thousands of one-off pieces a year. Requests for family crests, favourite trees, and traditional Victorian motifs are all common, and the vast majority of panels qualify for free delivery across Bolton.

As one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in use, etched glass has the advantage of letting through more natural light than coloured styles, since there’s no lead work or tint to block it. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, but the overwhelming majority of our work is still for homeowners across Bolton and beyond. We also produce other styles of Decorative Glass for Bolton clients, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Our Free Client Pages Design Service
Every order comes with free access to our Client Pages design service. A few days after ordering, we’ll send a computer-generated proof built to your exact glass sizes, showing precisely how the finished design will look. Want the border shifted, or your house number in a different font? Just ask — we’ll keep adjusting the drawing until it’s exactly right, and production only starts once you’ve given the go-ahead.

Perfect For House Names And Numbers
Etched glass suits house names and numbers particularly well, and it’s one of our most common requests for the fanlight above a front door. If your Bolton home has one, we can create a panel showing your house number or name. For the sharpest result, we generally etch the surrounding background and leave the lettering itself clear, so it stands out at a glance.

How Etched Glass Is Made
We start with a sheet of clear toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen design. Sandblasting equipment then wears away every exposed section at high pressure, leaving a permanently frosted texture wherever the glass isn’t protected.
Peeling the mask away afterwards reveals the finished pattern in full. Because that frosted texture sits inside the glass itself rather than on top of it, it can never fade, peel, or wear thin — unlike a vinyl “etch-effect” film, which typically starts to yellow and lift within a few years.

If you’ve an old or damaged etched panel at home, our glass artists can often reproduce the pattern closely, even where the original itself is beyond repair, as long as we have a photograph or surviving fragment to work from.
