Etched Glass Wetherby

Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Wetherby ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. Wetherby sat almost exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh on the Great North Road, once holding up to forty coaching inns because of it.

Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, made to sit exactly right on your door, in the same way Wetherby sat exactly right between two capitals and thrived on it. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Wetherby.

It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a town that knows how to sit exactly halfway between two capitals and thrive on it. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Wetherby make up most of what we produce. We also build the other three styles of Decorative Glass found on this site, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Our Free Client Pages Design Service

Every Wetherby order comes with its own Client Page, where a computer-drawn proof appears within a few days, scaled precisely to your glass. Something not quite right? Tell us and we’ll send a revised version — no cap on how many rounds it takes — because we won’t switch the sandblaster on until it’s exactly right.

Perfect For House Names And Numbers

House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Wetherby home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.

How Our Etched Glass Is Made

We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a pattern set at exactly the right point, the same way Wetherby itself sat at exactly the right point between two capitals.

Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.

Got an old etched panel at home that’s cracked or gone missing over the years? A photograph is usually all our glass artists need to reproduce the original pattern closely.
