Etched Glass Scarborough
Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Scarborough ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. The Victorian terraces climbing away from the harbour, built during Scarborough’s rise as a seaside resort, are exactly the kind of period housing where etched glass has always looked its best.

Sea air and salt spray are hard on paintwork and soft materials, which is one reason etched glass has stayed such a sensible choice along this stretch of coast — the pattern is worked permanently into the glass itself, with nothing painted or coated on top to weather away. Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, is bespoke to your own glass sizes every time; family crests, favourite trees, and traditional Victorian motifs are all regular requests, and the vast majority of panels qualify for free delivery across Scarborough.

Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, but the overwhelming majority of it goes to homeowners across Scarborough and the surrounding coast. We also produce other styles of Decorative Glass for Scarborough clients, including Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass, and Fused Glass.

Our Free Client Pages Design Service
We’d rather show you than tell you. Every Scarborough order comes with a free Client Page, and within a few days of ordering we post a computer-drawn proof scaled to your exact glass sizes. If the design needs stretching to fill the panel properly, or the lettering shifting a fraction, just tell us and we’ll send back a revised version. We keep going until you’re happy with it, and only then does the glass go anywhere near the sandblaster.

Perfect For House Names And Numbers
Etched glass suits house names and numbers particularly well, and it’s one of our most common requests for the fanlight above a front door. If your Scarborough home has one, we can create a panel showing your house number or name. For the sharpest result, we generally etch the surrounding background and leave the lettering itself clear, so it stands out at a glance.

How Our Etched Glass Is Made
We build every panel from a sheet of toughened safety glass, masking off the design so only the background is left exposed. High-pressure abrasive then wears that exposed area down to a permanent frost, while the masked design stays perfectly clear and glossy underneath.
Because that frost is physically part of the glass rather than a layer on top, salt air and weather have nothing to get at — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and peel within a couple of years, particularly somewhere as exposed to the elements as the Scarborough coastline.

Got a cracked or missing etched panel at home? Send us a photo and we’ll see what we can reproduce — our glass artists can often match an old pattern closely even without the original piece.
