Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Worksop ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. Worksop Priory holds one of the best-preserved sets of medieval floor tiles in England, with every individual tile placed as part of a much larger, carefully arranged pattern — and etched glass has always suited that same idea of nothing placed without considering the whole.

Etched glass, sometimes called sandblasted glass, obscures sections of clear glass to leave a permanent pattern behind. Every panel is built to your own glass measurements, with every part of the design considered against the whole, the way Worksop’s own medieval tilework was laid out centuries ago. Etched glass suits house names and numbers particularly well, and it’s one of our most common requests for the fanlight above a front door. If your Worksop home has one, we can create a panel showing your house number or name. For the sharpest result, we generally etch the surrounding background and leave the lettering itself clear, so it stands out at a glance.

How Our Etched Glass Is Made

We start with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen design, protecting everything except the pattern itself. High-pressure abrasive is then blasted onto the exposed glass, wearing the surface down to a permanent frost wherever the mask doesn’t cover it — a genuine, one-time change to the glass, with every element of the pattern considered against the whole before a single cut is made.

Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than sitting on top of it, there’s nothing to peel or fade later, unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and lift within a couple of years.

If an old etched panel at home has cracked or gone missing over the years, a photograph is usually enough for our glass artists to reproduce the original pattern closely.
