Etched Glass Butterflies Reeds – Blackburn

In 2014 we created this large etched glass butterflies panel to take the place of an old serving hatch in a kitchen of our client Mr Bull. The first image shows how the glass looked during the day and the second image shows how the etched glass looked at night, when the LED lights had been turned on.

The client purchased and installed the LED lights inside the frame so that the glass shines through the glass and not in front or behind the glass. Here is what Mr Bull said about the LED’s

” There is a strip of LED lights all along the top of the glass. The light from the LEDs is trapped within the two parallel surfaces of glass by total internal reflection and can only escape at the roughened surface (etched areas), showing up the pattern brightly. This only works with direct edge lighting and will not work with front or back lighting. You need a light source which is the same width as the glass thickness “

The LED lights are positioned inside the frame at the top so the etched areas that are higher in the design show up brighter as they are closer to the light source. The top half of the design looks whiter than the lower half of the glass which looks greener. The lights are not green but the iron in the glass gives a green tint to the glass.
