Colchester Etched Glass

The Leadbitter Glass studio supplies Colchester homes with Etched Glass and Victorian Etched Glass Panels every year. Etched Glass is one of the oldest forms of decorative glass but increasingly it is used to produce stunning contemporary art glass panels. Etched Glass has been used on many of Colchester homes, grand buildings and commercial buildings over the years.

Our studio also provides Stained Glass, Bevelled Glass and Fused Glass to clients in Colchester.

If you place an order with us, you will receive a free design service. The Client Pages Service is a great way to view how your etched glass panels look before they are created. You will get the opportunity to request changes before we start work on your panel(s). Once you see the Computer Generated Image, you can request any changes you wish. You may want a decorative border moving slightly, an extra butterfly or a house number made larger. We will make the requested alterations until you are 100% happy with the design and want us to proceed with production.

Recent commissions for Colchester clients….

We have supplied many homes in Colchester with our beautiful glass. Below are some examples of local orders.

Etched Glass Lion For Pub Window – Colchester

A restaurant owner in Colchester contacted us recently to enquire about our etched glass. They forwarded an image file of a Lion and asked us to price up the glass. The design was extremely detailed and is one of the most detailed designs we’ve created. The link above will show you the proof we created before the actual glass was made. The design was etched onto 6mm toughened glass with polished edges. The panel was then installed in between booth seats inside of the pub/restaurant.

Traditional Door With Matching Side Panels

A client from Colchester had a door with a narrow panel in the door and 2 very narrow side panels. They liked our 1203 design but were concerned how the side panels may look. We gave the client a price and they ordered straight away. Once the order came through we created the drawing you can see in the link above. We couldn’t add too much detail to the narrow side panels but the client loved it.

Deep Carved Laminated Glass – Colchester

Over 10 years ago we created the glass in the link above, for a client. 5 panels were created in total and they were installed into a door, and above the door. The glass was etched by repetitively sandblasting the design deep into the glass. As the pattern is blasted further into the glass it creates a 3D finish that gives an amazing finish. The glass was then sealed as double glazed units and delivered to the clients installer.

Your numbers up!

Etched glass is brilliant for house names and numbers for door glass and fanlights. Many Colchester homes have top lights above the door and they are the perfect place to display your house name or number. This type of glass is one of the most popular orders we receive. If your Colchester home has a fanlight above the door, we can create a panel with your house number or house name in etched glass. We can also create matching door glass if you require it.

How is Etched Glass made?

Etched Glass can be found on hundreds of homes around the city. This type of decorative glass product is very popular in the Colchester area and it is ideal for elegant traditional door designs and contemporary projects. This style of art glass produces a stunning effect without taking away any of the natural light from your home. We have produced many etched glass designs over the years which are installed across Colchester.

A temporary mask is ‘cut to shape’ and overlaid onto one side of the glass. The stencilled glass is then inserted into a sandblasting booth and coarse grit/sand is then fired at high speed over the design. Once an even etched finish is achieved, the mask is removed, leaving the protected areas clear with the unprotected areas being etched. For single glazed glass, we will apply a protective sandblast coating to the etched side. If the glass is to be double glazed, we do not add the coating because the etched side would be contained within the sealed unit.
