Etched Glass Gainsborough
Founded in 1994, the Leadbitter Glass Studio has been supplying Etched Glass panels to homes and businesses across Gainsborough ever since, delivering to every other part of the UK too. Gainsborough Old Hall is one of the best-preserved medieval manor houses of its kind anywhere in England, standing largely as it was built over 500 years ago.
Etched glass — sandblasted glass, more plainly — permanently frosts sections of clear glass to leave a pattern that becomes genuinely part of the pane. Every panel is built to your own glass sizes, kept in as good a condition as the day it was made, in the same spirit as Gainsborough’s own preserved hall. Most orders qualify for free delivery across Gainsborough.
It’s one of the oldest decorative glass techniques still in regular use, and one that suits a town that knows how to be home to one of the best-preserved houses of its kind. Our glass has appeared in a Prime Minister’s home and on Hollywood film sets, though homeowners across Gainsborough make up most of what we produce. Perfect For House Names And Numbers
House names and numbers suit etched glass particularly well, and it’s one of the requests we get most for the fanlight above a front door. If your Gainsborough home has one, we can build a panel showing your number or name, usually with the lettering left clear against a frosted background so it’s readable at a glance.
How Our Etched Glass Is Made
We begin with a sheet of toughened safety glass and apply a mask cut precisely to your chosen pattern. High-pressure abrasive blasted onto the exposed glass wears it down to a permanent frost, while everything under the mask stays perfectly clear — a pattern that stays exactly as made, the way Gainsborough’s own hall has stayed exactly as built.
Because that frost is worked into the glass rather than laid over it, there’s nothing to peel or discolour later — unlike a stick-on “etch effect” film, which tends to yellow and start lifting within a couple of years.
